Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple, Mangadu, Chennai




Location: 

Kamakshi Amman Temple is near by Poonamalle High Road. It is around 16 km from Chennai Metropolitan Bus Terminus CMBT.

History:




Once playfully, Goddess Sakthi closed the eyes of Lord Shiva in Kailash and immediately the whole universe become eternal darkness. Godess Sakthi desired Siva’s forgiveness. Lord Shiva Ordered  Goddess Sakthi to perform Tapasya and attain. So Goddess Sri Kamashi Amman Started her penance in the middle of panchagni in Manago forest by lifting her left leg on fire and folding her right leg. Also, holds japamala in her hand and meditated Lord Shiva to get married her.  Lord Shiva Came and ask her to come to Kanchipuram to marry once fulfilled the tapas by Sakthi. Once Sakthi left the meditated place. The heat of fire which was created by her was maded discomform for all living beings near that place. Adi Shankarar visited this place and put in a Sri Ardhameru Chakram  to calm down the heat of the fire created by the Sakthi and soothing for all living beings. This auspious place is called as Managadu.



About Temple:



Managadu is in south-western neighbourhood of Chennai. The temple construction was Chola style of Architecture. The Raja Gopuram was a recent addition to the Temple.


Sri Kamakshi Amman is worshipped here as 'Tapas Kamakshi" or the Kamakshi( The Goddess) performing penance, which in main sanctum. Sri Ardhameru Chakram is also found in the sanctum sanctorum in front of Goddess Kamakshi. This Chakra is considered as one of the form of Goddess hereself. Also, we can found the Tapas Kamakshi statue nearby the main Sanctum.
