About Chennai

A Short History:
Chennai is an old city and its formerly called as Madras, Madrasapatinam. It is located near coastal area adjacent to Bay of Bengal. Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagar Empires have ruled over. It formed as cluster of fishing village(Madrasapatinam) and the British EAST INDIAN Company came to Chennai and build a fort(Fort St. George) and factory in 1639 for trading, especially textile. Later Fort St. George become an administrative unit governed by president. And, Chennai become administrative and commercial capital when British ruled India. In 1996 government of TamilNadu changed the city name as Chennai from madras. Now, Chennai is one of Metro city in India, with industrial growth in various sectors and infrastructure growth.


About Chennai:
Chennai is Capital of Tamil Nadu and 4th Greater Metro City in India. It was called as Madras before 1996. It is one of the biggest city in the world and in 35th place. The total population is around 10 million. Chennai is famous for automobile capital. It is also referred as the largest city of South Asia.  The city has two river which is Cooum and Adayar River. Half of the city divide by Cooum river and the Adyar River divides the southern half of the city into two parts. The historic Buckingham Canal runs through the city. It is almost parallel to the coast. Chennai doesnt lost its old charm. Today, it is a big commercial and industrial centre. The city has much cultural heritage. The temples, shrines, forts and palaces of the city combine its past with the present. Attraction of the city is 13 km long Marina Beach in Chennai, is one of the 2nd longest beaches in the world.

  • Airways: Chennai international airport is one of the busiest airport in india and a hub to connect Asia, Europe and America.
  • Railways: Souther Railway headquarters is Chennai. Major railway stations are Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore and Tambaram. Central which connects to other state of india. Egmore connects other district of TamilNadu. For local transport, electic trains and metro trains facilitys are available.
  • Roadways: National Highways connects chennai with other states of india. And, State Highways connect other district of tamil nadu. Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus is one of the largest Bus Terminus in Asia which facilitate local and state transport. The flyover are build by government of tamilnadu in various location to reduce traffic jam around the city. Private transportation is also available throughout the city.
  • Seaways: Chennai Port and Ennor Port are the two major port in the city. The port used mainly for cargo services.
Tourist Spots: 
Marina Beach, St. George Fort, Santhome Cathedral Church, Vandaloor Zoo, Elliots Beach, Birla Planetarium, Kapaleeshwar Temple, Parthasarathy Temple, Vivekananda house, National Art Gallery etc.,


Climate:
Chennai is nearby coastal area. And its hot and humid with maximum temperature 37 to 42 degree Celsius in the month of April-June. From Sep-Dec is cool climate with seasonal rain.
